Alex and Lou, two young lovers from the isle of Kinomoto, take a romantic boat trip on the ocean. While on sea, they encounter a giant “moontain” and decide to climb to the top of the moon and watch the sunrise. In the meantime, the moontagne has disappeared along with their boat. Alex falls back into the ocean, where he’s swallowed by a whale. Lou herself is immersed into a strange alternate reality. Alex eventually manages to return to Kinomoto somehow. He’s devastated by the loss of his great love. Then a girl named Ariane turns up…
